Melasma

Melasma is a cosmetic condition evidenced by discoloration of the facial skin—irregular brown patches on the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose or upper lip.  Women are particularly susceptible to the condition, especially pregnant women or those on oral contraceptives or hormone medication.  Depending on whether the Melasma is dermal or epidermal, it can be treated topically or with laser therapy.  Topical medications containing hydroquinone or trentinoins are typically prescribed for Melasma.  Azelaic acid, which is thought to reduce the stimulation of melanocytes (pigment-producing cells), can also be an effective treatment. Chemical peels with glycolic acid can often improve the condition.

One of the hands-down most effective treatments for Melasma (sometimes known as the ‘mask of pregnancy’) is fractional laser therapy like the Fraxel SR, a remarkable laser system that targets the affected skin aggressively, yet is non-ablative and requires no downtime as the condition improves.  For those with Melasma or with a genetic predisposition to it, vigilant sun protection with products containing physical blockers (titanium or zinc dioxide) is necessary.
