Age SpotsOne of the distressing marks of overexposure to the sun is the photodamage which accumulates over time, often evidenced as splotchy, unattractive brown spots on the face, hands, décolleté and neck—or indeed in any area that has not had consistent and adequate protection from the sun’s harmful rays. Age spots, also known as: Liver Spots, Sun Spots, Lentigines or just freckles, can be effectively treated with laser. At NYDG, we have many therapies that address the brown spot problem, including photodynamic, light-based therapies like Fraxel, GentleWaves (LED) and Laser Toning, and topical skin treatments like microdermabrasion and chemical peeling. After examining your skin, the dermatologist can discuss the pros and cons of each type of treatment. This may include a combination of therapies, such as gentle chemical peeling and laser treatment. Of course, sun protection that filters both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays is strongly advised to help prevent the damage from occurring, or recurring after treatment. It’s Not Your Age, It’s Your Environment As we know, different people have varying degrees of sensitivity to the sun. But invariably, ultraviolet radiation (UVR) plays the major role in undesirable skin changes, and the list is long: wrinkles, roughness, laxity, mottled pigmentation, actinic lentigines, actinic keratoses, coarseness, scaling—just to name a few. Cigarette smoking is another environmental factor related to the development of these changes in the skin. There is compelling evidence that UVR from tanning beds is associated with an increased incidence of benign, premalignant, and malignant skin lesions. Photoaged and damaged skin should be treated both for medical and cosmetic reasons. Lasers and Other NYDG TreatmentsBlue Light with Levulan Chemical Peels
