Acne and Acne Scars

Lasers and photodynamic therapies are becoming an attractive option for treatment of acne and the scarring that can result from the condition.  Findings show that certain light therapies can control or regulate bacterial and sebaceous gland activity that leads to the development of acne.  Lasers may be ideal for treatment because they can treat many lesions at a time, are well-tolerated by the patient, do not have any side-effects and are of course drug-free. Acne and the subsequent scarring can appear anywhere on the epidermis where there are hair follicles below the surface (the sebaceous glands are attached to these follicles), including the face, back, and neck.  Specific lasers can target the afflicted area in a non-invasive, non-systemic way.

Treatment: Approaches to treating acne range from drug to topical to laser treatments. The first two methods are not always risk or side effect free and must be carefully monitored. Laser therapy is a safe and increasingly preferred treatment, with different lasers designated to treating the condition when it is active or removing the scarring after the acne subsides. Any effective acne treatment plan begins with an examination and consultation with a board certified dermatologist.  Control of acne may also include a number of methods used in combination, as determined by the dermatologist.
